What is the meaning of “Dukeries” in ‘Dukeries Retreat’?
The term "The Dukeries" refers to a district in North Nottinghamshire, within the ancient Sherwood Forest, so named because it contained several adjacent ducal seats (residences of dukes). This concentration of aristocratic wealth and power in one region was unique in England. The primary ducal estates that gave the area its name were:
Thoresby Hall - Seat of the Dukes of Kingston (later the Earls Manvers).
Clumber House: - (now Clumber Park): Home of the Dukes of Newcastle.
The name "The Dukeries" emerged in the 18th century and became widely used, highlighting the extensive private land ownership by these noble families who helped preserve much of the original forest landscape. While some of the original mansions have since been demolished or converted (Thoresby Hall is now a hotel, and Clumber House was demolished), the large parklands and woodlands continue to define the area and are popular public attractions today, many of which are managed by the National Trust.
Visitors can explore many of these historic sites, such as the Rufford Abbey & Country Park and the Harley Gallery and Welbeck Farm Shop on the Welbeck Estate.
